So many times I have heard this from creative professionals - "Photoshop is damn expensive I wish there was a software at a fraction of the cost". Well that prayer has been answered! Finally not only Photoshop killer but on top it's a cloud based product. It's free and if you pay only 19 Euro you get Pro edition which allows you to download the offline edition and you can carry on creative work without connected to Internet.
Sumo Paint is an online, feature-rich, free paint tool and photo manipulation application. But Sumo Paint is not just a tool; it boasts an impressive online art community of over a 4 million unique users from 200 countries. The primary purpose of the community is "to create, share, remix, explore, comment, rate and fave the artwork of its members."
If you cannot afford PhotoShop (or find it overwhelming) or some other high-end purchased application like Adobe Creative Suites, I strongly recommend you consider trying Sumo Paint. It is powerful, affordable (free), and easy to master.
SumoPaint's Main Features
You will find plenty of the standard, basic image editing tools in the free version of Sumo Paint plus many fun and whacky paint tool features.
Using a menu bar that is similar to Photoshop's, you will find the familiar blur, smudge, gradient fill, line tools, clone, and more. But you will also get other cool features, including a bulky star tool, and symmetry and custom shape tools.
Sumo's text tool (for adding text to images) is so simple to use it makes you wonder why other programs often lack in this are of software development.
Sumo's online community of artists is active and easy to navigate. Just as you typically experience on Flikr.com, Sumo community participants are willing to view work and offer feedback (almost all of the posts I read were friendly and offered support and positive critiques.)
Added Features and Perks
You can open files from your computer, Sumo Paint, or from a URL. If you purchase the pro version, you can download Sumo to your computer and work offline.
Sumo Paint has recently added some fun filter features including a kaleidoscope, wavelab, triangle pattern, liquid wave, spherical and cylindrical mapping, and a camouflage filter. (The liquid waves makes exceptionally beautiful images.)
Unlike Photoshop, Sumo Paint features are incredibly simple to implement within one click - and you instantly see the results for the entire image rather than just a small sample preview.
You can also send and receive messages to others in the Sumo Paint community.
Something that sets this free application apart from some of the other free image editors - you can edit pixels using Sumo Paint.
Ease of Use / Sumo Paint's User Interface
Sumo Paint's user interface is top-notch - easy to use and navigate and contains comprehensive tools you would not expect to find for free.
Sumo Paint also offers a ton of free image editing tools - and they also provide in-depth information on what their tools are and how they work. Their explanation of commonly use tools are so easy to understand (and contain graphics to illustrate points) that I recommend anyone scratching their head about the difference other image editors' blur and smudge tools read Sumo's explanations.
Of all the free image editors I have reviewed to date I like Sumo Paint's help features the best (but their tools are so simple to use, you may find you do not even need a lot of help.)
Sumo Pro Features
Sumo Pro can currently be purchased for $19.00 per year. Compared to Flikr.com and Picnik.com, the pricing is not only cheaper but you get a lot more with Sumo Pro:
License to downloadable Sumo Paint Pro (use locally on your computer, or via a browser);
Commercial use of both offline and online applications;
Sell your artwork and earn money;
Free updates for Sumo Paint Pro and other future tools;
Discount to Sumo products and services;
Increased commission for content sales; andSumo Pro settings and statistics.
